only lately the media were full of scandals centered around the usa based mercennary enterprise called blackwater and its main contractor, the us state department. 0n 16 september 2007 17 civilians were killed in bagdad by private blackwater military forces. what is hiding behind the company´s their smart internet presentation calling upon global stability solutions ? jeremy scahill, the author of Blackwater: The rise of the World´s Most Powerful Mercennary Army gives an interview on the agency´s dirty business in iraq and elsewhere:

indeed, big O unexpectedly started doing business with georgia last year. this was quite exceptional and sauseschritt was sent to tbilisi the represent the organisation at a big international conference dealing with corruption in a certain sector of society. sauseschritt had the impression that the current government has undertaken a lot of efforts to combat the bitter heritage of the past. he and also representatives of other io´s and ngo´s were fully convinced that the current government was on a good way of change towards democracy and rule of law. georgia and aserbajdschan were considered as stabilizing factors in the shaken caucasus region. we all knew that russia had little interest to let these countries slip away to the west, but we hoped that the rose revolution would bring a peaceful future to this country.

now it seems that all hopes are gone. lately, sauseschritt follows the news closely, and the most balanced interpretation of what is happening now in georgia can be read on the blog of onnik krikorian. the title: georgia, end of a fairy tale. let us hope it is not too late for sustainable conflict resolution.

es musste ja so kommen: nachdem sauseschritt bislang gegenüber hypes wie borat resistent war, haben sein jüngster kazakhstan aufenthalt und eine rezension über die offizielle kinematographische antwort kazakhstans auf borat in form von nomad (ENG) den ausschlag gegeben:

ein aufschlussreicher abend mit borat also. nicht dass der film besonders lustig gewesen wäre - ausserdem hatte er (auch in seiner scheinbar parodistischen verkehrung) kaum etwas mit kazakhstan zu tun. der hauptschauplatz sind die usa, der drehort teilweise rumänien, die filmmusik von balkan - hypes wie goran bregovic oder partizani geprägt. dass sich die regierung von kazakhstan zu einer offiziellen reaktion und einem gegenfilm hat hinreissen lassen: das ist eher ein armutszeichen für die offizielle politik denn eine erfolgsmasstab für den film borat. nun wäre der film natürlich rasch zu vergessen, wäre er nicht ausdruck eines trends, der den scheinbar aufgeschlossenen und toleranten, aber zynisch und herabsetzend agierenden reisenden ergriffen hat.

osteuropa, der balkan, die nachfolgestaaten der sowjetunion in zentralasien: sie gerinnen vor dem hintergrund von ignoranz, unwissen und angstlust zur freakshow des aufgeklärten travellers, konsumiert am besten in filmen wie borat oder in jener ach so lustigen buchserie von jetlag. sich rasch von reisemühsalen in mehrfach gedemütigten ländern (kommunismus, schockkapitalismus, autokratie und korruption) erholend, findet man/frau entspannung in der stigmatisierung des fremden. zudem darf man/frau sich so elegant dem mainstream von urlaubserfahrungen eines massenpublikums entziehen und spezielle erfahrungen lukruieren. ost - freakshows können in einer mischung aus linkem übermut, intellektueller hochnäsigkeit und dem überlegenheitsgefühl von westlichen betrachtern konsumiert werden und bestätigen die eigenen vorurteile. sich als etwas besonderes fühlen, ach ja, wie gieren wir danach. ein wenig theorie gefällig? (ENG)

in unserem fall wurde das konzept der freakshow auf länder, kulturen und lebensstile ausgedehnt, auf die da im osten, die zu spät gekommenen und zurück gebliebenen. die ost - freakshow macht den betrachter somit zu etwas ganz besonderem. mit kulturbezogener parodie, mit humor und lächeln hat das freilich wenig zu tun. es evoziert höchstens brech-lachen und hinterlässt äusserst üble gerüche. der film ist schlicht und ergreifend: unappettitlich.

hat normalerweise das jahr. wir leben damit, so schlecht und recht. viele bloggen, manche vertrauen auf sich und ihre kamera und machen mehr daraus: ein fotoprojekt voll narzistischer verirrungen etwa. jeden tag eine peinlichkeit, 365 mal. wer hätte nicht gern gewusst, wie red mare am 2. november im hot tub ausgesehen hat, oder texas mummy am 247. tag morgens. wenn das private und intime öffentlich wird, kann meistens nicht nur der voyeurismus der betrachter aktiviert werden, sondern bleibt mitunter auch ein schaler nachgeschmack zurück. kann der bartwuchs von bearded jon nicht auch unappetitlich sein? wen interessiert, was tonbel für ihren urlaub packt? auch the truth is hidden ist ein voyeuristischer grenzfall.
sauseschritt kann wohl den sammeltrieb verstehen, der sich in einem projekt wie 365 tage konkretisiert, nur, muss es immer selbstdarstellung sein? manchmal, ewa am 250. tag von julsatmidnight gehts auch völlig schief. aber toys, ja, toys, damit kann sich auch sauseschritt abfinden. danke, nina theevilone !!!

wer immer auch die afrikanische sicht auf oberösterreich in der filmsatire fest des huhnes genossen hat, dem sei nunmehr auch empfohlen, ein deutsches dorf aus der sicht eines pakistanischen ethnologen zu sehen. diesmal keine satire, sondern in echt. dem ethno::log verdankt sauseschritt beide hinweise, letzteren auf das wirtschaftsmagazin brand eins (GER):

dem genderblog hat sauseschritt eine filmankündigung entnommen: protagonist von jessica yu. großzügig interpretiert das genderblog den streifen als dokumentarfilm, der sich mit männlichkeitskonzepten befaßt. nun, das mag so stimmen, nur regisseurin jessica lang sieht das (ENG) etwas weiter, wengleich der untertitel fragt: what makes a man a hero?

der fim wurde im rahmen des sundance fim festivals 2007 (ENG) gezeigt. einer der vier beschriebenen charaktere der deutsche terrorist hans-joachim klein. anbei der trailer. nach sauseschritts recherchen noch nicht in deutschsprachigen kinos und auch nicht auf dvd erhältlich.

little, sauseschritt assumes. isn´t our mind full of stories, anecdotes, prejudices and images, which do add to a half true, half wrong perception of this country and its history ?

when sauseschritt strolled through the ambient area of atatürk airport in istanbul, he found this book in a store and hoped that it may help him to understand turkish society more deeply. he was irritated by the title of the book, though. why concentrate on turks only and not on all of turkey?

to be honest: sauseschritt expected much and found only little. who ever will wish to find in depth analyses on turkeys historical, economic, social and political condition may try to find it somewhere else. andrew mango only offers a collection of thoughts, opinions, statements and figures, which in themselves may be correct and good to know. nevertheless, sauseschritt missed a concise analyses, thoughtful interpretation and conclusions.

on the other hand we learn from mango´s book that military law can be useful, the genocide of the armenians was provoced by themselves, leftist parties always create problems and IMF programmes produce impressive results, etc. thanks a lot, mr. mango, we have to listen to these kind of lectures all the time.

only recently sauseschritt reported on food shortage in kazakhstan. last week there was more discussion on this issue in the international press. the russian newspaper kommersant reported (ENG) consequences of increasing world market prices for food in russia and other countries:

ja, ja, frau silvia, ist schon ok. nur so viel: im gegenständlichen fall hat es sich um politik gehandelt. und die entzieht sich ja bekanntlich ästhetischen kriterien. ansonsten empfehle ich, derartige gegenden, sei es virtuell oder rl einfach nicht mehr aufzusuchen: das erspart uns allen mißverständnisse.
