burning patience by antonio skármeta. a novel about 
isla negra and its people. sometimes sauseschritt feels like one of them.
räume und zeiten überwindend! über die häuser nerudas hat sauseschritt ja schon [an anderer stelle....] berichtet. aber da ist auch noch das mobile. das spiel aus hauchdünnen tonscheiben klingelt jeden morgen leise, wenn der wind durch das halboffene fenster fährt. es stammt von einem kleinen andenkenladen an der straße, die von santiago an isla negra vorbeiführt und an dem uns der bus an jenem vormittag entlassen hat. und noch heute tönt ein wenig von der poesie des ortes und dem dumpfen rollen des meeres am strand unter dem haus des dichters. und sauseschritt ist froh, dass ihn das buch von skármeta wieder an jenen wundersamen ort geführt hat:
hier an der insel,
das meer,
welch ein großes meer.
jeden augenblick
geht es aus sich selbst hervor,
es sagt ja, nein
nein; nein, nein;
es sagt ja in blau;
es sagt nein, nein.
es kann nicht ruhig sein.

the united states has spent more than $126bn on the war in iraq, which will ultimately cost every american family an estimated $3,415, according to a new report by two thinktanks.

auf dem rückflug nach wien ist sauseschritt in den guardian vertieft, der in seiner wochenendbeilage vom 25. juni eine reportage über den alltag kämpfender mujaheddin in kerbala, falluja und sadr city bringt. der schnoddrige aber bezeichnende untertitel: the only fun the kids get - shooting at the US sitting ducks.
wir stecken in amsterdam fest, um auf passagiere zu warten. vier amerikaner drängeln um mich herum, an ihrem handgepäck unschwer als musiker erkennbar, an ihrem aussehen unzweifelhaft als altfreaks. post - woodstock - freaks, manche/r aus der gebeugten leserschaft weiß, wer damit gemeint ist. der kontakt mit meinen neuen sitznachbarn ist schnell hergestellt. einer von ihnen (langes glattes schütteres haar zu einem zopf gebunden) überlegt süffisant, ob auch amerikanische zeitungen (so wie der guardian) über die toten des krieges informieren: 11,317 irakische zivilisten, 6,370 irakische soldaten und 952 soldaten der us - amerikanischen koalition. mein nachbar meckert über die anmaßung us amerikas, weltpolizist sein zu wollen, verliert sich in ätzende bemerkungen über die von klm dargereichten sandwiches und schläft dann ein. der weg von l.a. ist lang, die zeitverschiebung nicht unerheblich.
ach ja; die herren sind auf einer dreiwöchigen tournee durch südosteuropa (sarajevo, kosovo) und den nahen osten. "good old rock music, doors, stones and others ..." das zielpublikum: us amerikanische soldaten an ihren stützpunkten. "to cheer them up a little bit ...."
irgendwo
da draußen spielen und singen die herren jetzt, möglicherweise sympathy for the devil. und belasten mit ihrer gage das us amerikanische kriegsbudget - somit auch jenes der amerikanischen durchschnittsfamilie.

The Vienna-based South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO), a network of editors, media executives and leading journalists from South East Europe, and an affiliate of the International Press Institute (IPI), is deeply concerned over the attack on Alina Anghel, an investigative journalist for the weekly newspaper Timpul. According to information before SEEMO, on 23 June, Anghel was attacked by two unknown persons on the block where she lives in Chisinau. The attackers beat her with a crowbar and disappeared before the arrival of the police. She was taken to hospital, where she was diagnosed with a brain injury and a fractured left arm.
SEEMO is further informed that Anghel received several threatening telephone calls after the publication of an article that revealed a car transaction between the State Chancellery and a local company, Daac-Hermes, and that the attack came on the eve of a court hearing of the libel action brought by the company against Timpul. Daac-Hermes is seeking almost US$ 2 million in damages.
As SEEMO has been informed by its local partners, the Independent Journalism Centre, Press Freedom Committee, Access-Info Centre, Association of Independent Press and Association of Electronic Press (APEL), the attack on the journalist comes at a time when the press freedom situation in Moldova is deteriorating, and the authorities are trying to maintain control over National Radio and Television at any price and to limit the voice of the independent press.
SEEMO condemns the attack on Alina Anghel and asks the authorities of the Republic of Moldova to ensure a thorough investigation into this case and to bring those responsible to justice. We would remind Your Excellency that a safe working environment for journalists is a fundamental principle of any democratic society and we hope that the Moldavian officials will solve this case in a timely manner.

bericht der rsf aus dem jahr 2004 über die situation des journalismus in moldawien scheint sich nur wenig geändert zu haben. wiewohl sauseschritt nur selten rundmails veröffentlicht, sei in diesem speziellen fall auf einen offenen brief von seemo hingewiesen. auch rsf hat über diesen fall berichtet.exactly 90 years ago, on 28 june 1914 the young serb gavrilo princip shot austrian archduke franz ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and his wife sophie.
austrian newspaper reported intensively these days on the incidents in sarajevo, which finally led to ww1. sauseschritt followed the traces of princip and found an interesting article of los angeles journalist david devoss written in august 2000 for the smithsonian magazine:

one of my first priorities upon arriving in sarajevo was to find the famous corner where the assassination had occured, but after several false starts, I realized that gavrilo princip, a national hero prior to yugoslavia?s early 1990?s disintegration into warring factions, was now considered a criminal terrorist by bosnia. not only was the princip museum closed but all traces of its name had been sandblasted from the exterior. gone too, where the concrete embedded footprints marking the spot where princip stood when he fired the fatal bullets. even finding the site of the assassination was difficult, since officials had changed street names and removed all historical markers oertaining to the event. |

inzwischen ist an erwähnter straßenecke ein neues gedenkschild aufgetaucht, allerdings nicht mehr in kyrilischer sondern in lateinischer schrift. nur nach den in beton gegossenen fußspuren von gavrilo princip mag man noch immer vergeblich suchen. das bild eines touristen, aufgenommen 1986 (siehe unten), zeigt den ursprünglichen Zustand an jener straßenecke, wie er vom offiziellen jugoslavien offenbar erwünscht war. damals, im sommer 1992, als der beschuß von sarajevo unerträglich wurde, begannen die einwohner der stadt das princip - museum zu demontieren, in ohnmächtige rache an den relikten der serbischen dominanz im ehemaligen jugoslawien. auch die demontage der historischen hinweise an jener geschichtsträchtigen ecke in sarajevo ist in jener zeit passiert. so manche/r beobachter/in mag behaupten, dass die ecke (und das dem haus vorgelagerte trottoir) vollständig dem beschuß der serbischen milizen zum opfer gefallen sei; doch dies ist wohl nur die halbe wahrheit.

since 1984 the vienna city administration organises a huge festival on the long stretched island of the danube river. this means food, music, initiatives and sometimes sunny weather the whole weekend. too many people, one might think as almost 2.5 mio visitors were counted this time. anyway, there are some places to have a rest ....
