looking at this house brings back memories:
in first half of 2001 sauseschritt visited skopje. sitting together with friends on the balcony of a house close to the city park of skopje (see below), enjoying their hospitality and the warmth of the early summer sun. nevertheless, the situation in macedonia at that time was very serious. one could hear the noise of military conflict (bombing) only a few kilometers from there. you could not only hear, but also "feel" the explosions on that balcony. for months my friends were ready to escape a possible war in the city via the southern route to skopje. and they were waiting what would happen next: doing their jobs with their things packed and their car ready to leave. well, the conflict was settled before the war really broke out and nowadays a fragile peace, which is sometimes in question, can be sustained. we tend to forget these things very quickly .....

ach ja, da war damals noch dieser junge mann aus österreich, der sich zunächst weigerte, mit mir abends über die [steinbrücke ....] in das albanisch/türkische viertel von skopje zu gehen, um zu abend zu essen. er vertraute mir auch an, dass er eine kugelsichere weste mit im reisegepäck habe, für alle fälle. er war sichtlich in einer stimmung zwischen angst und (abenteuerlicher) erregung, wie so oft, wenn mann dem krieg begegnet.

did you get hold of your most wanted person during your last conference? it was difficult, you were not successful? other mighty persons joined mr. and ms. wanted and didn´t let you enter their circle? you succeeded and you could finally talk to him/her and he/she answered that he/she has already answered your urgent request? negatively, of course! you do know, that this is a lie? welcome to the club!

prominenten podiumsdiskutant/innen scheint ein wichtiger wesenszug gemeinsam zu sein: jene des latenten wie manifesten wunsches nach flucht vor den teilnehmer/innen einer konferenz. denn was bislang durch brief, fax und email nicht erreicht werden konnte, versuchen letztere durch die persönliche begegnung im rahmen der konferenz nachzuholen. bevor jedoch der/die gewünschte von einem schützenden ring gleich prominenter umgeben ist, der nur schwer von weniger mächtigen durchbrochen werden kann, muß die persönliche begegnung erfolgen. überall wird derzeit der mythos vom gestaltungsspielraum beschworen, in wirklichkeit sind (fast) alle getriebene ihres berufes. die natürliche folge: flucht- oder jagdverhalten. wohlan .....

the stone bridge rises magnificently over the river vardar in the central part of skopje, the capital of macedonia. the bridge connects the old and the new part of the city, and is the primary element of the daily communication of its inhabitants and visitors. there is no visitor who visited skopje and did not walk over it. the bridge connection the two part of Skopje not only physically, but also with time. all important events throughout history and all the events of today take place on it. this is the reason why the bridge deserves special treatment and care, because the loss of the bridge would mean the loss for an entire city. we talk about the kameniot most and bridges represent important symbols in the balkans.

....... haben auf dem balkan eine besondere konnotation: man/frau denke nur an die symbolkraft der brücke von mostar. hier in skopje mag dies auch gelten, wiewohl bislang eine fragile konfliktlösungs-balance zwischen den bevölkerungsgruppen aufrechterhalten werden konnte. lange zeit schlummerte eine verfallene brücke zwischen dem modernen stadtteil und dem alten ("türkischen") stadteil vor sich hin, neuerdings wurde sie renoviert. und in wirklichkeit sind es zwei brücken, die drei zonen miteinander verbinden. eine brücke über den fluß vardar, die einen vom mazedonien -platz aus gesehen in eine art zwischenreich bringt, wo sich das stadtteil nur schwer entscheiden kann, ob es albanisch/türkischen charakter annehmen will. schließlich die zweite brücke, die eine stark befahrene straße überquert und uns letztendlich in das alte basarviertel bringt. nicht ohne grund finden immer wieder auf dem mazedonien-platz jene nationalistischen demonstrationen statt, die sich in ihren haßtiraden gegen die bevölkerung jenseits des flusses wenden. und auch jenseits des flusses schwankt man/frau zwischen dem pragmatismus des zusammenlebens und irrationalen albanischen träumen.

the old railway station of skopje was built in 1940/41 and the local tourist information tells us, that it was the most beautifull on the balkans at that time. the clock on the frontside stopped at 5.17 at the moment when skopje, on july 26, 1963, was destroyed by an disastrous earthquake. today the city museum of skopje is located in this building.

gerne schlendert sauseschritt die neue renovierte fußgängerzone hinunter zum alten bahnhof von skopje: eigenartige erinnerungen an die kindheit, an den ersten auslandsaufenthalt ein jahr vor dem großen erdbeben im jugoslawien titos. skopje war nur eine zwischenstation auf dem weg nach griechenland, die mit dem weißen vw käfer zurückgelegt wurde. für das kind die ersten sauseschritte in einem wundersamen land voll eigenartiger gerüche, seltsamer menschen und eindrucksvoller sprache. ein stück kindheit eben, jener bahnhof, der nur ein jahr später fast völlig zerstört werden sollte. merkwürdige koinzidenz: gegenüber dem alten denkmal ein denkmal zur 40 jährigen erinnerung an die große katastrophe.
