this daring and ingenious construction of nineteenth-century architecture, the history of antonelli´s dream and most glorious achievement, the mole, as it is familiarly known by turin inhabitants, dates back to 1862 when the jewish community in turin purchased the site in via montebello (then the "contrada" of the "cannon dóro") and decided to erect a synagogue to celebrate their emancipation by carlo alberto, explains a leaflet available in the entrance room of the building. mole antonelliana nowadays hosts a breathtaking elevator to the top of the building and a partly strange cinema museum.

eine aus geldnot und architektonischem größenwahn gescheiterte synagoge erhebt sich imposant über die dächer der altstadt von turin. sauseschritt würde von einem besuch abraten, wäre da nicht jener freischwebende lift im inneren der kuppel, der auf die spitze des gebäudes führt: von oben erschließt sich ein großzugiger ausblick auf stadt und umgebung von turin. das kinomuseum allerdings ist nicht einmal wegen seiner geschmacklosigkeit sehenswert. vielleicht aber entspricht es dem geschmack jener tourist/innen, die turin damit anzusprechen beabsichtigt?
