the jewish synagogue with the cemetery which are located in the northern part of the town, evoke a memory of the local jewish community. jews were in strážnice since time immemorial. after the old town had been burnt down jews moved their community behind the new square, to the "jewish street". they brought their tombstones there, the oldest from which originates from 5208 of the Jewish epoch (1448 of our epoch). the jewish town - the ghetto was separated, the main gate was to be closed at night. jews fell within the direct administration of the lord of the domain, they had their own hospital, lower and upper school, synagogue (built in 1750) and bath for purification of Jewish women. jews were mostly butchers and shopkeepers. during the world war II. all the jews of strážnice were deported into fascist prison camp. the synagogue and the cemetery fall within the administration of the jewish community centre in brno. ein spaziergang durch den geburtsort von sauseschritts urgroßmutter (brababuschka!!!) apollonia f. straznice, folkloremusik-liebhaber/innen vor allem durch sein jährliches festival bekannt, läßt sich in nur wenigen stunden erkunden: freilichtmuseum, der bata kanal, reste von stadtmauern und zwei kirchen. masaryk hat dort studiert.
nach längerem suchen entdecken wir den verfallenen jüdischen friedhof und die 1750 erbaute jüdische synagoge des ortes. am friedhof schwelen überall feuer, die ein alter mann zum verbrennen des unkrauts zwischen den gräbern gelegt hat. der geruch verbrennenden holzes zieht sich bis hinein auf den hauptplatz der stadt. auf einem grabstein der hinweis auf die konzentrationslager tabor und auschwitz. 1930 lebten 194 jüdinnen und juden in straznice. als sauseschritt und e. den friedhof verlassen, stehen drei männer vor der (nur außen) renovierten synagoge und tuscheln über uns. sind wir für sie auch zu juden geworden? was haben sie über uns zu sprechen?
und noch eine makabre begebenheit: dass meine brababuschka in straznice geboren wurde, habe ich dem ahnenpaß entnommen, mit dem ein onkel sauseschritts seine rassenzugehörigkeit dokumentierte. wie begeistert hat er mir einst von seinen jahren in der hitlerjugend erzählt ....
