jet laggin´ for spook country

das wohl für sauseschritt derzeit eindrücklichsste an der lektüre von william gibsons pattern recognition ist die verarbeutung des jet lag durch die heldin des romans, cayce. doch davon später.

wer immer dieses buch als science fiction bezeichnet, liegt falsch oder lebt im falschen time slot: zwar wirkt die sprache ein wenig sci-fi artig, aber angekommen sind wir längst an den orten und umgebungen, die etwas beklemmend beschrieben werden. der ganz normale wahnsinn also, dem sich die naiven facebook-spieler auf ihrer suche nach sozialisierung nicht bewusst sind. internetüberwachung also, logowahn, gläserne konsumenten, das trauma 9/11 und die ganz normalen angstneurosen. doch vor allem ist von clipheads die rede (hier: nur ein beispiel), von deren jagden, phantasien und lebensberechtigungen. wer jemals nächtens auf der jagd nach videoclips in den bildschirm gefallen ist, um erst nach stunden geschädigt in die welt davor zurrückzukehren, weiss wovon hier gesprochen wird.

wie gut wir uns es in dieser welt der überwachungen und bedeutungsvollen bedeutungslosigkeiten eingerichtet haben! auch davon berichtet das buch, welches mittlerweile auch schon einige jährchen auf dem buckel hat. es wird gerne mit dem neuesten roman des autors, spook country, besprochen, deshalb auch die schnelle vor-lektüre, die sich als äusserst anregende entwickelt hat. denn nun wenden wir uns gut gerüstet, eben diesem zu: in den nächsten tagen und standesgemäß inm flugzeug und den trostlosen hotelzimmern.

nun zurück zum jetlag, dem sich sauseschritts nun bald wieder aussetzen darf: man/frau gestatte das direkte zitat aus gibsons pattern recognition, zugleich der beginn des romans:

natürlich hat sauseschritt allergrösstes interesse daran, dass die von ihm verbreiteten nachrichten auch einigermassen verlässlich sind. das unterscheidet ihn nicht von vielen anderen blogger/inne/n. auch die verwendung von wikipedia ist uns allen gemeinsam: viele von uns mögen natürlich zweifel an der verwendung einzelner artikel haben, aber nun ist es auch wissenschaftlich offiziell. wikipedia ist zumindest besser als der online brockhaus, wie der standard berichtet:

no, the 100 USD laptop does not cost 100 USD - it costs almost double this price. and yes, this wonderful thing, promoted by mr. negroponte to reduce education gaps in developing countries, does face serious criticism (ENG):

Dr Igwe Aja-Nwachuku said: "What is the essence of introducing One Laptop per Child when they don't have seats to sit down and learn; when they don't have uniforms to go to school in, where they don't have facilities?" "We are more interested in laying a very solid foundation for quality education which will be efficient, effective, accessible and affordable." The previous government of Nigeria had committed to buying one million laptops (...)

as always, when technological innovation promises to change the world, one should look more closely at the social impact of such an intervention and into the social environment in which such an instrument is supposed to be embedded. a lot of promises, but is there any evaluation on what these computers are really able to change in an education system? I doubt if there is really any interest to go deeper into these issues. before complaining that the "charity one laptop per child" is being misunderstood, the learning outcomes of these laptops should be evaluated. or does this campaign aim at other than pedagocical issues and the millenium development goals are just misused to promote a product? here is the product:

... at least we assume so. why reach out to the world, better stay at home and enjoy more of the same. is it correct that we are not reaching out, but much more like to stay home ? china herald presents some results on "regional" blogging in china, which may be valid also for europe:

Unions say that disputes over the sites are growing at a phenomenal rate and have demanded clearer guidelines for their use. Studies have shown that up to £130m a day in productivity is lost because of the sites, with Facebook's British members spending an average of 143 minutes a month logged in (...)

die fragwürdigkeit dieser awards steht fest. es ist wie mit männern bei misswahlen. jeder findet sie eigentlich doof, aber hinsehen tun sie alle. nichtsdestoweniger stöbert sauseschritt gerne herum, um hie und da auch echte fundstücke in seinen fundus aufnehmen zu können. wir werden sehen und berichten. ach ja, diesmal ist auch charming quark dabei (die sich entsprechend freut und von 15 minuten ruhm spricht).
